Time Zones are a Mess

Seriously look at this map:

It's a mess.

Time zones are supposed to be 24 evenly distributed longitudinal columns. Instead, exceptions are the rule. The world is riddled with a convoluted carve outs for every country and province.

Take China for example. China decided it was one big time zone despite spanning five. On the Western edge of The People's Republic the sun might not rise until 10 AM. While on the Eastern edge dawn broke at 5 AM!

Poor Greenland is trying and failing to do the same thing.

For godsakes Nepal chose five and three-quarters for its time zone!

Clearly we need a better solution.

The simple, singular solution

Maybe China is on to something here. What if we did away with time zones entirely? Everyone all over the world would agree on the time.

However time would no longer have any relation to when the sun is up. Meeting your friend for brunch might happen at 2 AM in LA, while in Tokyo you would sip your mimosas at 7 PM. (Or 1900 if you prefer military time, but that's another matter).

The whole point of time zones is to avoid this problem.

Time zones place the sun highest in the sky somewhere around noon. Otherwise we'd rob gunslingers of their iconic dueling time. "We'll face off at high seven-in-the-evening" just doesn't have the same ring to it as high noon.

Come to think of it, this is still a problem with our existing time zones! Unless the duel takes place at precisely the right longitude high noon won't be highest noon. One gunslinger will have sun in their eyes while it warms the other's back. An observant coolhand could select their space to pace with care, giving themselves an unfair advantage!

I don't want to live in a world where duels are decided by knowledge of timekeeping, astronomy, and geography. Only the fastest hands should fight another day!

The wonderful, infinite solution

What if Nepal has the answer after all? They chose their unusual time zone based on their local solar time. The chart below shows the difference between each time zone's noon and the true solar time noon.

China's approach is to reject many time zones in favor of one. But what about the opposite? What if we went from 24 to a hundred time zones? Or a thousand? Or an infinite number?

With GPS and a "little" math, everyone on earth could have their own personal time zone! The sun would be highest in the sky at exactly 12:00 no matter where you are in the world! Sure making plans would be a bit confusing. Everyone's clocks will be a few minutes different. But isn't it worth it to have your very own time zone?

Let's acknowledge that everyone is the center of their own universe!

That way high noon will always be the perfect dueling time.
